I know a lot of people are concerned with labeling a behavior too much, but I implore you to go beyond the label- just ignore it - because this is one of the BEST books out there for anyone who deals with a child that is defiant on a consistent basis. And you know who you are: you’re exhausted from the constant power struggle over things you feel shouldn’t be an issue but somehow become (or are) a fight. You find yourself “gearing up for battle” when it’s time for bed, time to eat, time to take meds, get off the computer, do homework, do chores (or even ONE chore). You feel ashamed that you raised your child to be this way. You feel like you have no control whatsoever over your child’s behavior (and sometimes -or often) no control over the words that fly out of your mouth in the heat of an argument. Do not beat yourself up over it. Feeling as if you’re responsible for it helps neither you nor your child and just allows it to continue. This book is EMPOWERING because it explains the behaviors you thought were either your fault, you just got a “bad kid”, you’re the only one out there experiencing this (or one of just a few), and anything else that leaves you feeling powerless. It gives you knowledge (in plain terms-as opposed to “clinical”) and ways to deal with it. Even if you don’t follow the guidelines, I cannot imagine you won’t feel better after reading this book. Another recommendation is “Ending the Parent-Teen Control Battle” by Neil Brown. You are not alone!
