Brian Deer's newest book is an amazing investigation into the career of Andy Wakefield, the charlatan who proposed linkages between the MMR vaccine and various illnesses such as Crohn's and ASD. These ridiculous ideas (I cannot even, as a man of science begin to even label them as theories), dominated the field of Autism since the late 1990's and rise like zombies to infect and torment the minds of parents everywhere - parents of infants due for vaccinations and parents of children with ASD who continuously drudge up their guilt on a frequent basis since they blame the diagnosis on one or more vaccines. As a psychologist who works exclusively with children diagnosed with Autism (and their families), I will invariably have multiple conversations based on the dribble that this quack fabricated and put out into the world to poison people's thinking.If I had it my way, I would use this book as a text in a course on ethics and/or research methods to illustrate the damage that can arise when things go wrong and why it is so damaging to the field of medicine and more broadly as to how it affects the public's perception of science. In the US, we are already dealing with a plethora of people who "do not believe in science" and doubt top scientists in the field (note: this review is written during the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic which is ravishing us). While we cannot blame dear ole Andy for this entire collapse in trust, he did play a significantly large role.In terms of the writing style, it is crisp, fast moving and zips you along. I don't think I've read another book / article that makes the details of immunology and gastroenterology so fascinating. I always knew that Andy's work was drivel, but my perspective came more from my statistical understating that I applied to epidemiological studies into the matter; this book explains that as well as the science (or lack thereof).Buy it and I promise you that you will read this book in record time.
